Tewkesbury is a town in Gloucestershire, England, located at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon. The town is characterised by a predominance of limestone buildings and features many notable Tudor examples. This is a pleasant and welcoming town, that offers a good number of traditional pubs, restaurants and inns to choose from, including the Black Bear, which was built in 1308 and is reputed to be the oldest in Gloucestershire. Another remarkable public house of the town is the Royal Hop Pole Hotel, on Church Street, which is now a Wetherspoons pub-restaurant, which contains a medieval banqueting hall within it, and featured in the Charles Dickens classic The Pickwick Papers. The half-timbered Bell Hotel, and the House of the Nodding Gables, and the Abbey Cottages, are among the other historic buildings of the town.
The Norman Tewkesbury Abbey, is a very popular attraction as one of the few monastic churches to be spared in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The Abbey Mill also remains and can be viewed on the Mill Avon. The Abbey is also said to have been the place where the Saxon hermit "Theoc", after whom the town derives its name, once lived.
Other attractions in the area include the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, Hailes Abbey, Sudeley Castle Gardens & Exhibitions, Stanway Water Garden, the Cotswold Falconry Centre, and the Cotswold Motoring Museum & Toy Collection, to name only a handful.
