The seaside resort town of Teignmouth in the attractive county of Devon lies on the banks of the River Teign and holds the title of being the last place in England to be invaded by a foreign power. Teignmouth is steeped in maritime history and has a historic port that was already well developed by the early 14th century. As the harbour silted up around the 15th century, Teignmouth’s port declined in importance and by the 17th century, smuggling was one of the town's most significant trades along with the fishing industry. The historic last raid on England came in July 1690 after the French Admiral Anne Hilarion de Tourville defeated an Anglo-Dutch fleet at the Battle of Beachy Head and some of the French fleet, anchored nearby in Torbay, travelled up the coast and attacked Teignmouth.
Teignmouth today is one of the country's top holiday resorts and has been popular with visitors since Georgian times and truly flourished with the coming of the railways in the 19th century. The elegance of the Georgian architecture and the fun of seaside attractions blend beautifully and Teignmouth offers much to see, do and enjoy; with golden sandy beaches, a pretty promenade, wonderful Victorian pier, excellent shopping areas and a great choice of pubs and eateries. The port is still a busy place and fishing boats as well as pleasure craft bob on the water as visitors enjoy the view from sheltered beach huts or out at sea on hired crafts and the passenger ferry.
