The large market town of Tavistock is in the attractive county of Devon, lies on the fast-flowing River Tavy and is home to the ruins of Tavistock Abbey that was founded here in 961. The river flows right through the centre of town that is at the edge of Dartmoor and amidst tremendous natural beauty. Once at the heart of the copper industry, Tavistock was a stannary town with a rich history. Sir Francis Drake was born here and went on to become the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world; he is honoured with a statue here that is replicated in Plymouth.
The charm of Tavistock has not been lost and it still has its Pannier market as well as quaint specialist shops and a calendar of traditional celebrations including; the Goose Fair in October that has existed since 1116. The town comes to life in vibrant celebration and draws crowds for this traditional fair that was created to enable the purchase of a Christmas goose in time to fatten the bird for the feast. Other celebrations during the year are the Food Festival in September and Carnival in August amongst others. There are ample amenities, eateries and pubs as well as wonderful walks, historic sites and visitor attractions both in the town and surrounding area.
