The historic market town of Tamworth is found in the county of Staffordshire and gets its name from the River Tame which flows through the town, as does the River Anker. Founded by the Saxons around the 6th century, Tamworth was later sacked by the Danes in the 9th century and later still, Aethelflaeda defeated the Danes and built a castle here to defend the settlement in 913. Tamworth Castle and Moat House is amongst the best preserved Norman motte-and-bailey castles in the UK.
Visitors today can explore the past or dive into the modern with a wealth of attractions, activities and historic sites. The Snowdome is the UK's first full-sized, real-snow, indoor ski slope and there is also tenpin bowling at Strykers Bowl as well as nearby Drayton Manor Theme Park; an award-winning theme park set in 280 acres of parkland with 'white-knuckle' rides, family fun, a zoo and Discovery Centre.
