The large, industrious town of Swindon in the county of Wiltshire originated as a small market town until the coming of the Industrial Revolution. Swindon grew rapidly after the construction of the Wilts and Berks Canal in 1810 and the North Wilts Canal in 1819. The canals brought trade and a huge increase in the population of Swindon. The railways accelerated progress when Swindon Junction station opened in 1842. A whole new town was created between the new railway works and Swindon Hill and today, this is the vibrant heart of Swindon.
Visitors to Swindon will find a modern, pedestrianised town centre that offers a wealth of shopping in its shopping centres as well as a diverse range of goods and produce at the local and international markets. The original town of Swindon is now known as ‘Old Town’ and is a lovely contrast; with quiet courtyards and alleyways, traditional pubs and shops as well as stylish cafes, bars and eateries offering a choice of international cuisine.http://www.flickr.com/photos/11035469@N08/3085039079/
