Swanscombe is a small town in the Borough of Dartford on the north Kent coast of England. Its heritage is largely in the production of cement, an industry from which the town thrived for many years. The quarrying of cement near the town have unearthed some remarkable archaeological finds. Bone fragments and tools were discovered in the quarry in 1953, of what became known as the Swanscombe man — one of the earliest humans known to have lived in England. The site of the discovery is now the Swanscombe Heritage Park. The Swanscombe Man, which was later identified to be a woman, was an early Archaic Homosapien that lived around 400,000 years ago. The remains are held at the Natural History Museum in London, and a replica is on display at the Dartford Museum. A Danish settlement and castle have also been discovered near the town.
