Swanley is a town in the garden county of Kent that has grown from a crossroads with virtually no buildings, to the populous place we know today. It was the arrival of the railways that led to the development here and Swanley became a place where many came from London to benefit from the perceived healing properties of the rich soil and climate that were now within easy reach. There were three hospitals established here as a result, the Kettlewell Hospital in 1885, Parkwood Hospital in 1893 and White Oak Hospital in 1897. The horticultural industry here thrived too at the time and was followed closely by industry.
Swanley’s countryside location remains a draw for visitors, with beautiful natural scenery surrounding the town as well as in its parks and open spaces. Swanley has good amenities,a range of shops, choice of eateries, traditional pubs and cultural attractions and of course, easy access to a host of activities in the surrounding countryside and nearby towns and cities. Swanley Park is a popular place to visit with its model railway and boating lake as well as classical music performances in the summer and firework events during the Swanley Gala celebrations.
