Sutton is a large London borough at the outskirts of the city where the county of Surrey starts. The old manor of Sutton used to belong to the Benedictine Abbey of Chertsey that was founded around 666. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 Sutton was described as having two churches which reflects the ongoing development here, although the houses would have been simple wooden structures with thatched roofs and the population small. In 1755 the road at Sutton was a turnpike that was part of the main coach route for London to the newly popular seaside resort of Brighton. Coaching inns developed to meet the need of travellers and Sutton began to prosper. It was the coming of the railways in 1847 though that brought the most significant change and Sutton developed rapidly.
Sutton today is a populous and diverse borough with a good choice of shopping and amenities as well as pubs, restaurants, eateries, cultural attractions and historic sites. The area continues to develop and thrive, offering excellent transport links to the city and coast and ample opportunity to enjoy visitor attractions both in Sutton and the surrounding area.
