Sunbury-on-Thames is a town in Surrey, within the London commuter belt. This is an ancient town with evidence of occupation dating to at least as early as the Bronze Age, including 12,000 year old funerary urns. As its name suggests, it is located on the banks of the River Thames and enjoys the advantage of being so close to the capital yet much more laid back and traditional in itself.
An interesting feature of the town is the Millennium Embroidery, housed in the purpose built Sunbury Millennium Embroidery Gallery. It created in the 1990s as a combined effort by local residents to commemorate the turning of the millennium. The gallery, which resembles a boat, is located next to Sunbury Park, a features a landscaped walled garden and café. The embroidery and gallery have become a popular leisure attraction, with pleasant scenic views over the River Thames and seasonal entertainment.
Other popular attractions in the area include Kempton Park Racecourse, Kempton Park Steam Engines at the Kempton Park waterworks, the River Thames Boat Trips, and The Riverside Arts Centre. The town's St Mary's Anglican Church and nearby Ferry House feature in the famous Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. Sunbury Cross also features in "The War of the Worlds" by H.G.Wells.
