A small, ancient market town, Sudbury is found in the picturesque county of Suffolk, along the River Stour. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a market town, although an earlier reference in history occurs at 799 when Aelfhun, Bishop of Dunwich died here. The market in Sudbury was started in 1009 and continues today on the Market Hill every Thursday and Saturday with vibrant stalls and lots of activity. The excellent Sudbury Heritage Centre & Museum gives visitors the opportunity to explore Sudbury's fascinating history through a permanent display.
Sudbury is a great place for outdoor activities like walking, cycling, fishing or simply taking in the surrounding countryside. Market Hill and North Street host the majority of the town’s amenities, with shopping, pubs, cafes, wine bars and restaurants as well as independent shops and interesting buildings. Gainsborough’s House is a pleasure with delightful galleries, garden and teashop, whilst the River Stour offers walks and scenery around the famous Water Meadows.
