Stroud is the main town in the Stroud District of the county of Gloucestershire, England, situated in the Cotswold Hills at the confluence of the Five Valleys. The town is characterised by steep winding streets of limestone buildings, and large number of independent shops, coffee shops, and tearooms. The town is a centre of activity for the surrounding villages and small market towns with a long-standing artistic community that brought Jasper Conran to refer to Stroud as "the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds". Various festivals are held annually in the town, including an annual Fringe festival on the first week of September, along side the Stroud Festival Fortnight.
The town enjoys a convenient and scenic location surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within close proximity of a number of popular sites and attractions, including the Cotwolds Way, and the historic cities of Gloucester and Cheltenham, with a good selection of local amenities, including several reputable pubs and restaurants, good local shopping prospects, excellent transport links and a choice of holiday accommodation to suit a range of budgets and requirements, all of which help to make this an ideal location from which to explore this popular tourist region of England.
Attractions in the area include Painswick Rococo Gardens, Woodchester Mansion, Prinknash Abbey Bird and Deer Park, the Chavenage Elizabethan house, Gloucester Cathedral, and the National Waterways Museum (Gloucester).
