The village of Street in Somerset lies in the scenic Somerset Levels and takes its name from a 12th century causeway that ran north across the River Brue to Glastonbury. Street's history is a varied tale dating back to the Dark Ages when it was a small settlement at the edge of the Polden Hills, reliant on agriculture and quarrying for blue lias building stone. The stone was used to rebuild Glastonbury Abbey and the thoroughfare facilitated this. By the mid 17th century the Society of Friends had become established in Street and one particular Quaker family, the Clarks are still very much a feature of the village today. Clarks started out selling sheepskin rugs and woollen slippers and later, boots and shoes. The business grew and became C&J Clark which is today known as Clarks Shoes and Street’s ‘Clarks Village’ was the first purpose-built factory outlet in the United Kingdom. There is a fascinating Shoe Museum here that tells the story of the family, the business and the village where it all started.
Street has ample amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as visitor attractions and sites of interest in the surrounding area. North of Street is the River Brue which is ideal for riverside walks and to the south are the Walton and Ivythorn Hills as well as the vast and diverse, East Polden Grasslands biological Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Further historical evidence of the development of the village can be seen at the Anglican Parish Church of The Holy Trinity dating from the 14th century that is a Grade I listed building.
