Stratford-upon-Avon is an English market town in south Warwickshire that is prettily situated on the River Avon, close to Birmingham. The town is Anglo-Saxon in origin, with the majority of its early growth having taken place in the medieval period when Stratford became a market town. The name of the town derives simply from the reference to a Roman Road, or street, that once forded the River Avon; "avon" being a Celtic word for river. Stratford is an extremely popular international tourist destination due to its fame as the birthplace of the poet and playwright William Shakespeare.
As such, the town caters well for visitors, with a good selection of unique shops and chain stores, and a variety of pubs, restaurants, and quality accommodation. There are countless fascinating and beautiful walks in the town and in the wider local area, as well as an official open-top tour bus service.
A few of the thematic attractions in the area include the Royal Shakespeare Theatre — home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Hall's Croft — the one-time home of Shakespeare's daughter, and New place — where the bard passed away. Stratford Butterfly Farm, the Bancroft Gardens, the Stratford Armouries, and Falstaff's Experience are a selection of the non-Shakespeare related attractions in the town. River cruises, the ferry, boating holidays and the Riverbank Walk are also very popular.
