Strachur, and its neighbour, Strathlachlan, are united parishes to the west of Cowal, in the Scottish council area of Argyll. The name 'Strachur' is Gaelic, and means 'Glen of the Heron'. It is situated by Loch Fyne, in a a region that has been officially designated an area of outstanding natural beauty that also borders the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. It consists mainly of uplands, with altitudes that rise to 3000 feet above sea level.
