As the name suggests, Stowmarket is a market town, situated in the county of Suffolk and set on the picturesque River Gipping, which is joined by the less attractively named River Rat to the South of the town. The Gipping was made into a canal in 1793 and the old towpath is now enjoyed for its pleasant walks along the footpath through the Gipping Valley. The Anglo-Saxon word ‘Stow’ means ‘principal place’, signifying the importance this small market town held in its past. It was first granted a market charter in 1347 by Edward III and a twice weekly market continues today on Thursdays and Saturdays.
There is plenty to see, do and enjoy here, with historic buildings, eateries, tradional pubs, cultural attractions, lovely recreation areas, pretty houses and luscious scenery. At the heart of Stowmarket is the parish church of St. Peter and St. Mary that along with other listed buildings, are considered to be of special architectural or historic interest. The Recreation Ground is much loved by visitors and residents alike and hosts the annual Carnival as well as fairs and other activities throughout the year. The Memorial Gates on the Recreation Ground entrance were erected in memory of the fallen Great War and still play a very important part in Civic events.
