Stourport-on-Severn

Stourport-on-Severn is a popular tourist town in Worcestershire, most noted as the start point of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal that links the rivers Severn and Trent. It was uniquely created as a canal port in 1766 when the Canal Navigation Act for Worcestershire received Royal Assent. At this time the Severn was the busiest English river carrying goods from Bristol up to the Midlands. The Staffs and Worcs Canal, leaves the wide River Severn at Stourport and potters along twisting river valleys and then through some remarkable sandstone scenery around Kinver. It skirts the edge of suburban Wolverhampton and then crosses the wide open farmland of Cannock Chase before joining the Trent and Mersey canal near the beautiful Tixall Wide. It is 46 miles long with 45 locks that takes up to 5 days to pass through on narrow boat.

Stourport is a fascinating inland port with much of the port area little changed since the 18th century and offering delightful architectural finds for those with an interest in history. There is a charm and welcome here that echoes a long history of visitors passing through and amenities springing up to cater for their needs. The basins area provides a fascinating insight into the workings of the canal port. Several businesses work on the site in buildings that were erected when the basins were constructed. The tranquillity of this area is tangible and contagious, creating a perfect place for holidays.

There is plenty to do both in Stourport-on-Severn and the surrounding areas. The Wyre Forest Visitor Centre is rated as one of the top three most ecologically important forests in Britain and is less than two miles from here. It has three well designed, self-guided trails that lead the visitor to all the most beautiful and memorable places.

The well known West Midlands Safari Park covers an area of almost 200 acres and is the ideal place to spend the day with your family and friends. It is just a short drive from here, as is the famous Severn Valley Railway. Running regular steam-hauled passenger trains between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, the journey is full of interest. The route follows the River Severn for most of the way and one of the highlights of the trip is crossing the river over the Victoria Bridge.

Stourport-on-Severn offers an idyllic holiday destination and perfect starting point for exploring the glorious county of Worcestershire.
