The village of Stockbridge in the county of Hampshire, England lies on the River Test, in the scenic Test Valley that is popular with walkers, nature lovers and above-all, anglers who come for the trout fishing. Stockbridge is thought to have been settled since at least the time of the Iron Age camps of Danebury, Meon Hill and Woolbury; as it is located at a narrow point in the river valley, where it is possible to cross over the marshy terrain. Stockbridge was certainly developed after the Norman Conquest as by 1190 it was granted the right to hold a weekly market that continued right up until 1932. During the late 18th century, drovers would bring their cattle through on the way from Wales to London, Portsmouth or Southampton and Stockbridge became a place of rest on the journey.
Stockbridge offers plenty of shops, galleries, eateries and pubs as well as ample amenities. The closure of the railway here in 1967 has led to the development of the old line that is now known as ‘Test Way’. Test Way is a wonderful path enjoyed by walkers and cyclists who come to the Test Valley area for its beauty and abundant wildlife, flora and fauna.
