The small town of Steyning in the charming county of West Sussex was once an important trading settlement that thrived in the Middle Ages, before the River Adur silted up. Steyning’s economic development came to a halt when the River Adur was no longer able to provide a river port for the wool trade. The outcome of this event is that the town is relatively unchanged by time, with lovely old buildings, including Tudor style half timbered houses and elegant Georgian town houses.
Steyning is a picturesque town that offers visitors little independent shops, attractive buildings, historic sites and scenic surrounding countryside, abundant with wildlife, flora and fauna. Steyning celebrates each year with the popular and vibrant Steyning Festival that is considered one of the best small arts festivals in the area. The best place to unravel the history and heritage of Steyning is at the Steyning Museum in Church Street with exhibits and displays tracing the past of the town and the people who live here.
