The town of Stevenston in Ayrshire, Scotland is in a beautiful area that has long been settled, with the first mention of Stevenson coming in a charter dated 1240. Along with the towns of Ardrossan and Saltcoats, Stevenson is one of a group called 'Three Towns'. Outdoor enthusiasts, those with an interest in history and nature lovers are amongst the most numerous visitors because of the wealth of history and natural beauty here. Stevenston is also popular with cyclists as it is on the Sustrans cycle path.
Stevenston is a former coal mining town that offers ample amenities and is within reach of other towns offering additional choices for dining, shopping and leisure activities. The railway station here links towns in the area as it has since it first began operating in 1840. Eglinton Country Park is nearby, found in the grounds of the old Eglinton Castle estate, in the parish of Kilwinning. It is spread over 98 acres of varied landscape, including a vast area of woodland. At the heart of the park lie the ruins of the once magnificent Eglinton Castle that is managed and maintained by North Ayrshire Council and its Ranger Service. As well as Eglington Castle, just north of Stevenston are the ruins of Kerelaw Castle, with a history spanning over 800 years.
