Stamford is an attractive and ancient town in the south of the English county of Lincolnshire, much of which is a designated conservation area with more than 600 listed buildings. It is situated on the scenic River Welland, at the meeting point of four ceremonial counties.
One of the most complete dinosaur skeletons found in the UK was discovered in the town in June 1968. The sauropod Cetiosaurus oxoniensis is estimated to be around 170 million years old, and is fifteen metres long. The area of the discovery, known as the Jurassic Way, runs from Banbury to Stamford. The Hereward Way and the Macmillan Way also run through the town, in addition to the Torpel Way, which leads to Peterborough.
