The town of Stafford in the county of Staffordshire has a well documented history encompassing the origins of the Ancient High House, Stafford Castle, the churches of St Chad and St Mary, the great hall of Shugborough, the Shire Hall, Izaak Walton and its rich, historic past. It was the Normans that built Stafford Castle in 1070, soon after they invaded. The castle is now ruins but is illuminated at night, making it a striking landmark atop the impressive earthworks. The oldest building here is St Chad's Church that dates back to at least the 12th century; richly decorated, there are figures carved into each archway and pillar that are believed to have been made by stonemasons from the Middle East. Today the Church hosts a modern Timewalk computer generated display to take visitors on a journey through the history contained within the walls.
With lovely parks, gardens and open spaces to enjoy, as well as excellent amenities, Stafford is a pretty town; Victoria Park, a celebrated art gallery, good shopping and a variety of places to drink, dine and explore. Centrally located and with exceptional road and rail access along with proximity to several major cities, Stafford offers the visitor an easy starting point to get the most out of this region.
