The largest town in the county of Cambridgeshire, St Neots lies on the River Great Ouse and is named after the Cornish monk St Neot whose bones were concealed in the nearby priory of the same name. The combination of visiting pilgrims and the excellent strategic location of the town led to growth and when the Industrial Revolution came, brought increased prosperity through corn milling, brewing, stagecoaching and the railways.
Visitors can’t help but be taken with the River Great Ouse and its Riverside Park that offer charming antique shops, boat trips and lovely scenery in a tranquil setting. The Riverside is linked to the Market Square by the town bridge; originally built in 1180, it was replaced in the early 17th century by a stone bridge. Oliver Cromwell is closely associated with this area and it is here in Cromwell Country and St. Neots that spectacular period re-enactments are held. The 12th century Market Square remains the heart of St. Neots and is one of the largest market squares in England. The St. Neots Museum encapsulates the town's rich history; an excellent starting point for every visitor that adds so much to the sights and places of this fascinating area.
