Spilsby is a market town in the English county of Lincolnshire, neighbouring the seaside resort of Skegness, historic Boston, and 33 miles from of the county town of Lincoln. The town is situated upon elevated ground situated scenically between the Lincolnshire Wolds. It developed as a rural market town over the centuries and still retains much of its country character, though now with the modern conveniences of several small supermarkets and clothing stores along with the traditional bakers, newsagents, butchers and greengrocers. There is a good choice of holiday accommodation in and around the town, together with several cafés, restaurants and takeaways.
The town's Bolingbroke Castle, birthplace of King Henry IV, was built at 1220 and was badly damaged during the Battle of Winceby in the English Civil War so that now only the lower sections of the outer walls remain, though they are still an interesting spectacle and draw a lot of visitors to the town. Gunby Hall is also a very popular local attraction, which is now owned by the National Trust. It was built in 1700 in amid several acres of landscaped and wooded parkland, and features a blue gazebo and well-maintained gardens. It is a private family residence that is open to the public on only select days of the summer weeks.
