Sowerby

Sowerby is a picture-perfect village in the county of North Yorkshire that has connections with the author James Herriot. Former residents of this village have even featured in Herriot’s popular books. Despite its size, Sowerby offers more than enough to please the visitor, with the "Crown and Anchor" pub and restaurant, "Oswalds" hotel and restaurant, a pretty village green, tree lined streets with old timbered houses and at the southern edge of the village, the Cod Beck River, with a 17th century pack horse bridge and church.

A short walk away is a Neolithic round barrow, "Pudding Pie Hill" and over to the east of Sowerby is the open area of Sowerby Flatts. In the 18th century, an attempt was made to build a canal from the centre of Sowerby, to connect with the River Swale but this was abandoned, although evidence of the works survives.
