Sowerby Bridge in the county of West Yorkshire is blessed to be set in the beautiful Ryburn Valley. There is indeed a bridge here and an iconic one at that. The first evidence of a stone bridge across the River Calder dates from 1526, but it is thought that earlier wooden structures will have existed back in medieval times. Daniel Defoe described the "stately stone bridge of several great arches" at Sowerby Bridge when he passed over it in the early 18th century.
Local crafts, town events, charming eateries, friendly locals and the beautiful West Yorkshire setting of Sowerby Bridge make it a lovely destination for visitors. In the past, the enjoyable local canal was closed and partly filled in, thankfully it has now been re-opened as a popular leisure waterway.
