South Shields

South Shields is a coastal town of the county of Tyne and Wear, in England. It is located at the mouth of the River Tyne, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The location was originally settled by the Brigantes, and then later the Romans built a fort here as part of the supply chain to Hadrian's Wall, the occupation of which has left many ruins that can still be observed. The present town was founded in 1245 through the development of the fishing industry and salt-panning.

The town is situated on a peninsula, at the point where the River Tyne meets the North Sea. It boasts six miles of picturesque coastline, three miles of river frontage, and gently slopes from the Cleadon Hills down to the river valley.  It has long sandy beaches which are sheltered by Limestone cliffs, among which is Marsden Bay, which is one of the largest seabird colonies in Britain. This is a pretty and popular tourist town, which is most notable as the setting of several novels by Catherine Cookson.
