The town of South Petherton in Somerset lies on the River Parrett amidst the scenic area of Yeovil Sands, at the foot of a limestone ridge that has long been quarried for its Petherton stone. Although South Petherton has shown evidence of an early Roman settlement, it was during Saxon times that it grew and developed. The town under the Saxons became a large royal estate that included a minster church, royal palace and for a brief period in the 11th century, a mint. By 1213 South Petherton was prospering and was granted a market charter. During the 17th century the town was one of the major production centres of bronze cauldrons and skillets for use as cooking vessels, that were traded throughout Britain.
South Petherton offers some amenities and is within easy reach of other settlements offering additional choices for dining, shopping and leisure. Attractions within the town and surrounding area include; the Grade I listed Wigborough Manor House that was built in 1585 of local Ham stone with Welsh slate roofs but never completed to the original designs and just outside of town is the beautiful East Lambrook Manor Gardens that holds the national collection of geraniums and a collection of snowdrops. The gardens were created by the well-known ‘Leading Lady of Gardening’ Margery Fish.
