South Molton

The small town of South Molton in the attractive county of Devon lies on the River Mole and has been settled since early Saxon times. By the time of The Domesday Book of 1086 the town had grown in both development and importance as it is recorded as having four priests, which was an unusually large number at this time.  Prosperity came to South Molton as a market town at the heart of the wool trade that was a thriving industry in the area until the 19th century. The Museum here boasts two Royal Borough Charters granted by Elizabeth 1st in 1590 and Charles 2nd in 1684 that are celebrated with fairs and activities throughout the town every June.

South Molton is a popular tourist destination as visitors come to enjoy the surrounding area that reaches Exmoor, Dartmoor, the rugged coast to the north and the beaches to the west. For cyclists, bird-watchers, walkers and nature lovers there is a huge choice of activities and sites to enjoy. This market town still holds its weekly market in its square still on Thursdays with an extra Pannier Market on Saturdays.
