The town of Somerton in Somerset lies in a picturesque area on the River Cary amidst beautiful natural scenery popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. Somerton was once an important settlement that was at the heart of battles for control of the region when in 733 the King of Wessex lost control of Somerton to Ethelbald, King of Mercia. The town returned again to West Saxon royal control in the 9th century. Somerton continued to develop and glove making became a major industry along with brewing and the production of ropes and twine.
Somerton’s wide market square with its roofed Market Cross is the heart of the town, surrounded by old stone houses and prettily floodlit at night. Somerton offers ample amenities and shops, eateries and pubs and for further choices, it is within easy reach of other towns and villages. Within the Market Square and town centre are the old Town Hall and the old courthouse building as well as other historic architecture in Somerton’s churches dating back to the 15th century. The surrounding area too offers a wealth of activities and attractions for visitors including the Viaduct Fishery specialising in course fishing with six well stocked lakes.
