Named for its location in dales and valleys of central Lancashire, Skelmersdale was designated as a New Town in 1962 to house the overspill population of Merseyside, which gives the town a very strong association and accessibility with the city of Liverpool. The original Skelmersdale, or "Old Skem" was a much smaller mining town.
The village is very modern and well planned, with plenty of popular pubs, shops and amenities to hand. Freckleton offers an excellent vantage point from which to enjoy the Lancashire countryside along with the attractions of the local holiday resorts, family attractions and historical sites of interest, including the Ribble Valley, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Samlesbury hall, among others.
