The suburban development of Sidcup in the county of Kent is in close proximity to London and used to be referred to as the gateway to Kent. Sidcup started out as a tiny hamlet and ecclesiastical district formed out of the parish of nearby Chislehurst in 1844. Although there is an earlier mention in the 1254 Dictionary of London Place Names by David Mills, when it was known as Cetecopp; it was in 1301 that the name changed to Settecope then in 1407 to Sidycope. The coming of the railways in 1865 was to propel Sidcup's fortunes and the population grew.
Sidcup today is a thriving town that attracts large numbers of visitors to work, shop or enjoy the town with excellent amenities, shopping, eateries and pubs as well as lovely parks and open spaces. The Kent countryside with its pretty villages, historic sites, lovely walks and attractions is of course, just outside the town; that surely still is, the gateway to Kent.
