Shrewsbury is an historic market town in the West Midlands of England, situated on the River Severn. The town is a cultural and commercial centre for the county, as well as for a large area of Wales, and so boasts excellent shopping, with an extremely high turnover generated from the sector each year. This is greatly contributed to by the high volume of visitors who come to take advantage of such a broad range of shops among the beautiful and heritage rich streets of the old town. The Screwsbury town centre has barely deviated from the original medieval street plan, and features more than 660 listed buildings, with a number of 15th and 16th century examples. The distinctive red sandstone castle of Shrewsbury was founded in the late 2nd century, along with Shrewsbury Abbey by a Norman Earl. Walls once extended from the castle and encircled the town like protective arms, and these, along with the Walls Tower are now protected by the national Trust and can be seen in the Town Walls . The town also hosts the Shrewsbury Flower Show, which is one of the oldest horticultural events in the country.
