Shoreham-By-Sea

The small seaside town of Shoreham-by-Sea is in a picturesque setting with the South Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the north, the valley of the River Adur to the west and the river and beach to the south. This scenic location attrcts visitors who enjoy both the seaside resort of Shoreham-by-Sea as well as the abundance of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in the surrounding countryside. A settlement here dates back to pre-Roman times, with the town and port we know today established by the Norman conquerors towards the end of the 11^th century. One of the earliest buildings here is the St. Mary de Haura Church that was built in the early 12^th century.

Shoreham-by-Sea has been a seaside resort since the coming of the railways in the 19^th century. There are plenty of seaside attractions, shops, eateries and pubs as well as historic sites and places of interest. As you stroll along the shingle beach and River Adur you will catch sight of a cluster of pretty house boats that were created from barges, tugs, mine sweepers and other disused craft. For an informative glimpse into the history and heritage of Shoreham-on-Sea, the Marlipins Museum on the High Street, housed in a 12^th century building, has interesting displays and exhibits.
