Shap

Set amongst the fells, Shap is a small village in the county of Cumbria and the Eden district, named after the River Eden. The village received its market charter in 1687 and although it is now rarely held, a market cross is still here as a reminder of the past. In the 19^th century, the railways came and Shap experienced some growth and prosperity; at one time, the granite works just outside the village, was so prosperous that it was a separate community, with its own Co-op store.

Shap is a village with ample amenities and shops, eateries and pubs as well as being within an area with historic and cultural attractions and sites. Located on the route of the Coast to Coast Walk and with an abundance of outdoor activities available to enjoy, Shap is popular with visitors. Fans of the film ‘Withnail and I’ often find their way to Shap as it was the backdrop to many of the scenes in the film. Another star of film is Sleddale Hall at the Wet Sleddale Reservoir, the location for ‘Uncle Monty's’ cottage Crow Crag.
