Shanklin is a popular Edwardian seaside resort neighbouring Ryde on the Isle of Wight, which is off the southern coast of England. It is situated at Sandown Bay on a scenic sandy beach. The "Old Village" and nearby wooded ravine, known as Shanklin Chine, make it a very pleasant location from which to explore the island. The long esplanade along the beach is populated with hotels and restaurants to cater to the busy tourist scene, while the town's retail district occupies the cross roads around Regent Street and High Street, and is the largest retail area in the south of the island. There is also good choice of supermarkets and local shops that are convenient for those taking advantage of the self-catering accommodation in the area.
Popular attractions on the island include the Seaview Wildlife Encounter, Carisbrooke Castle, the famous views at The Needles and Alum Bay, the 108 km Isle of Wight Coastal Path, the Blackgang Chine theme park, the Isle of Wight Zoo, and Yarmouth Castle, to name only a few. The Isle of Wight is also a haven for wildlife and sites of geological and natural importance. It is one of the few places in England where the red squirrel is flourishing.
