Selkirk is a town and royal burgh in the Borders of Scotland. It is situated in the council area of Roxburghshire, on the banks of the Ettrick Water, which is a tributary of the River Tweed.
It was once the county town of Selkirkshire and is one of the oldest Royal Burghs in Scotland, as well as the location of the earliest settlements in the lands of what was to become the Scottish Borders. It is also the place where William Wallace was declared guardian of Scotland.
The town developed mainly under the woollen industry, but is known for the bannocks dried fruit cake, as well as for its connections with explorer Mungo Park, poet James Hogg ("The Ettrick Shepherd"), Sir Walter Scott, and for its association with former American president Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose ancestors originated from the area.
