Saxmundham

The small market town of Saxmundham in the county of Suffolk, lies in a valley on the River Fromus at the centre of the county’s Heritage Coast region. With rolling countryside, winding lanes and a picturesque setting, Saxmundham has a long history as a settled area and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. A market charter was granted in at least 1272 and continues to this day, with a vibrant market still held every Wednesday. Along the High Street and Market Place are shops and other buildings that date from the Georgian and Victorian period, including; the Bell Hotel, built in 1842 on a site which had been occupied by an inn for centuries; the Market Hall built as a Corn Exchange in 1846 as well as the fine Victorian railway station and more.

Being at the centre of Suffolk's Heritage Coast region makes Saxmundham an ideal destination for those looking to explore the area and enjoy the scenery with its varied flora, fauna and wildlife. Visitors to Saxmundham will find good amenities, ample shops, pubs, eateries, historic buildings and nearby visitor attractions. The beautiful heritage coastline offers its own attractions; from important nature reserves and areas of outstanding natural beauty, to the RSPB’s main visitor centre and bird reserve and many historic sites.
