Sawrey

Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey are two separate neighbouring villages dating from at least the 14th century. They are set in an enviable location of the Lake District National Park between Coniston Water and lake Windermere, the largest and most famous of the lakes. They are near the town of Hawkshead, where William Wordsworth was educated, but are famous in their own right for their association with Beatrix Potter, who lived at Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, at the end of the 19th century. Various sites in the villages feature in her books such as The Tale of Tom KittenThe Fairy Caravan and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. Waymarked paths lead between the ferry port at Windermere and Beatrix Potter's house.

Each of the villages has its own reputable pub-restaurant, while Far Sawrey also has a hotel and village shop. There are a number of self-catering holiday cottages in the local area, as well as several camp sites and caravan parks, and a host of popular visitor attractions.
