The historic town of Sandwich lies on the River Stour in the county of Kent and was one of the main UK ports in medieval times. Once, long before the River Stour silted up, the river was wide enough and deep enough for the great sailing ships of the day to pass through. Today, smaller craft are on the waters but the history survives in the many ancient buildings that make Sandwich one of the best preserved medieval towns in England. The oldest street in Sandwich, Strand Street, used to be the quay when the river was wider. The word sandwich as an item of food came into being centuries later.
Sandwich offers visitors a broad choice of places to dine out, including, restaurants, pubs and cafes plus good shopping and of course, historic sites. For further exploration of the history and heritage of this town, popular visitor attractions the White Mill Heritage Centre, the Richborough Roman Fort and the many old churches, offer excellent insight. For golfers, there is a veritable abundance of choice in the area; including two world-class golf courses, Royal St George's and Prince's. Fishing on the Delf Stream is another great reason to visit Sandwich and for tranquillity and natural beauty, the Salutation Gardens are a welcome respite.
