Sandbach

The market town of Sandbach in the county of Cheshire has an early history dominated by numerous Welsh and Danish incursions. The first recorder mention in the Domesday book of 1086, notes the town as having a priest and a church and by the 7th century, the townspeople were converted to Christianity by four travelling priests; Cedda, Adda, Betti and Diuma. A market charter was granted here in 1579 and the market continues to this day on Thursdays on the Scotch Common. The Common was the site of conflict during the town fair of 1651 when around 1,000 Scottish troops, retreating from the Battle of Worcester, paused here to rest but locals and market stallholders took them on. Sandbach is probably most famed though for Edwin Foden Sons & Co. Ltd. that produced massive industrial engines, as well as small stationary steam engines and from 1880, agricultural traction engines.

Sandbach today attracts visitors who come to enjoy the historic sites, the Foden connection, visitor attractions and scenery both in the town and in the surrounding area. There are ample amenities, specialist shops and larger stores as well as eateries, pubs and of course the colourful Thursday market in town; the surrounding countryside too offers plenty to see, do and enjoy. The Trent and Mersey canal passes through Sandbach, offering delightful walks and opportunities to see the flora, fauna and wildlife along its banks.
