Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a picturesque seaside resort in the county of North Yorkshire. Records of its origins are pretty scarce but it is known that Saltburn-by-the-Sea was a centre for local sea smugglers; with the local Landlord, John Andrew referred to as the "King of smugglers." From Marine Parade the views out to sea are breathtaking and the coastline is what draws many visitors. The Saltburn Cliff Lift is journey to be enjoyed as it is one of the world's oldest water-powered cliff lifts. The Cliff Lift came to be after the building of the Saltburn Pier in 1869; the steep cliff walk was putting people off of walking from the town to the pier. Also known as ‘The Saltburn Tramway’ it provided the perfect transport between the pier and the town.
Most of the buildings here are constructed using "Pease brick", named after the Pease family of Darlington who were responsible for the development of both Middlesbrough and Saltburn. The most prized of the buildings attributed to the Pease family is said to have been The Zetland Hotel, one of the earliest purpose-built railway hotels that boasted its own private platform. With Victorian buildings, the forest walk that leads to the lush Valley Gardens, a smugglers' museum and stunning scenery, Saltburn is a lovely destination. The wonderful coastal setting has brought surfers to the shores and national surfing events are held during the autumn and winter months, attracting competitors from all corners of England, Scotland and Wales.
