Saint Agnes

The large coastal village of St. Agnes in the scenic county of Cornwall is a picturesque place that grew in prosperity from the mining of copper and tin; with the landscape of the area of considerable geological interest. Throughout the 17th century, the Tonkin family tried to create a harbour but were unsuccessful and in debt when they gave up. St. Agnes finally got its harbour in 1799, allowing shipping and trade in copper ore and coal. A pilchard fishing industry was also established from the harbour and at its peak in 1829. The harbour and port were bustling until the loss of the harbour wall in 1916. For a fascinating look into the history and heritage of St. Agnes and the surrounding area, the St. Agnes Parish Museum offers exhibits and displays of the mining and seafaring past.

St. Agnes offers visitors so much to enjoy; with a choice of beaches, dramatic coastal walks, breathtaking scenery and a host of activities and attractions in the local area. There are ample shops and amenities, eateries and pubs as well as sites of interest and historic significance, including; ‘The Beacon’ that rises 629 feet out of the landscape with the panoramic views from the top that stretch over 23 miles of the coast and inland.
