Saffron Walden is a market town in the county of Essex, in a largely unspoilt rural area. An attractive town that is one of the finest preserved examples of a medieval market town and quintessentially English to its core. Set within a Conservation Area, visitors will find varied examples of beautiful architecture dating from the 12th to the 21st century. Saffron Walden is home to one of the oldest museums in the country that was opened in 1835 and has a variety of exhibits and collections; from moccasins and mummy cases to woolly mammoths and Wallace the lion. Local history, archaeology, natural history and geology, ceramics, furniture, textiles, ancient Egypt and much more are on permanent display here.
The market has been held here since 1141 and continues to this day, with markets now held every Tuesday and Saturday, offering colourful and vibrant shopping experience. A Country Market also takes place on Friday mornings at the back of the Town Hall, offering freshly baked cakes and savouries, preserves, fresh produce and craft goods. Visitors can also enjoy plenty of independent shops, eateries and pubs around the main shopping area, the Rows.
