Rye is a small town in East Sussex, England, located two miles from the coast at the confluence of the rivers Rother, Tillingham and Brede. Rye was an important Cinque Port in the medieval period carrying trade across the Channel between England and France until the port eventually silted up and became obsolete. Until this time, the town has a strong association with smuggling gangs and piracy throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
The historic features of the old town make it a popular tourist destination, which provides much of the towns income. Rye now offers a good choice of quality hotels, guest accommodation and restaurants, as well as a number of activities including fishing and watersports at the Rye Harbour.
