Rutland

Rutland is a small landlocked county in central England, between Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. It is only 18 miles by 17 miles in size, and contains just the towns of Uppingham and Oakham, amid a gathering of hamlets and villages. The county has a very rural and attractively old-fashioned character that makes it a very charming place to visit, with a predominance of ironstone and limestone, thatched or Collyweston stone slated old cottages. The Rutland Water, a large artificial reservoir with a surface area likened to Lake Windermere, features at the county's centre. It is an important nature reserve that provides an overwintering site for wildfowl and a breeding site for ospreys.

Attractions in the county, aside from the lake, include Lyddington Bede House, Oakham Castle, Rutland Railway Museum, Tolethorpe Hall, Wardley Wood, to name only a handful.
