Royston is a busy market town in the county of Hertfordshire that grew at the intersection of two important, ancient thoroughfares: Ermine Street, constructed by the Romans and Icknield Way, said to be 'the oldest road in Britain' and was already ‘ancient’ even before the Romans invaded Britain. In 1742 a strange cave was found, it was carved out of the chalk in the centre of Royston underneath the central crossroads of the town. The carvings in the cave have led to much speculation about the origin and function of this man-made cave. In the 17th century Royston was popular for hunting and King James I built a hunting lodge here for himself.
With a rich history, Royston has much for the visitor to discover and the best place to start is the Royston Museum that delves deep into the town's fascinating history. A must for any visitor is the Royston Cave; unique in Europe and believed to date from the 14th Century, it is a man-made cavern in the shape of a beehive, with a small aperture at the top for ventilation. Its most remarkable feature is an extensive range of wall carvings representing the Crucifixion, the Holy Family and several saints. The Cave is a mystery just waiting to be unravelled.
