Rothwell

The market town of Rothwell in West Yorkshire lies on the River Dolphin within the ‘Rhubarb Triangle’ an area famous for producing early forced rhubarb that was at its peak of production during the early 20th century. Coal mining was a major source of income in Rothwell for much of its history with local pits including the Fanny, the Rose and Rothwell Water Haigh. Coal mining here utilised a simplistic ‘bell pit’ system where a shaft is sunk to reach the coal that is then excavated by miners who are lowered by winch and removed by means of a bucket; since the demise of coal mining in the area, the former colliery has been redeveloped as a picturesque country park popular with residents and visitors alike.

Rothwell has an excellent choice of shops, restaurants, eateries and pubs as well as choices for evening entertainment and bars in the bustling town centre. Historic sites, visitor attractions and places of interest in Rothwell include the remains of Rothwell Castle, Springhead Park, Rothwell Colliery Country Park, the World Famous Oldroyd’s Rhubarb Farm and the local parish church of the Holy Trinity with a ring of eight bells that dates from medieval times.
