The town of Rothesay is the scenic main town of the Isle of Bute, which is in the Scottish council area of Argyll and Bute. It is reached by way of a regular ferry service from Wemyss Bay, which links to Glasgow by rail. The ruins of the 13th century Rothesay Castle are located in the heart of the town.
Rothesay developed as a popular tourist destination during the Victorian period, when it became fashionable for the neighbouring Glaswegians to take a daytrip "doon the watter" along the Firth of Clyde. It is best recognised by the striking bauhaus-inspired pavilion, which stands on the seafront.
