Rossendale

Rossendale is a local government district and borough comprised of a number of former mill towns in Lancashire, England, that are situated in the valley of the River Irwell. Part of England's industrial North West, Rossendale has a combination of urban and rural features, and has good links to the major cities of Manchester and Bolton. Some of the larger towns of Rossendale are Bacup, Rawtenstall and Haslingden, along with numerous villages, most of which are historically and culturally rich as well as traditionally beautiful, with the benefit of their situation in the idyllic rolling landscape of rural south-west Lancashire, at the Welsh border.

Rossendale is a very creatively orientated area, having produced a number of artists, actors and creative minds, including Betty Jackson, the fashion designer, who grew up in of Bacup, where her father owned a shoe shop. The region has a very active community of artists and features several painters' studios, to take advantage of the excellent views the area possesses. The artists who make up the majority of the major studios within the Valley now participate in an annual "Reveal Open Studios" weekend to showcase their work.

The first part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail, largest public art scheme in England, runs along the towns and villages of the district. Dialect poetry and writing is also a tradition of Rossendale and local poets included Andrew Houston and Edwin Waugh. Waugh's Well, above Edenfield and Cowpe, marks the place where Waugh wrote many of his poems. It is situated along a very popular walkers route, of which there are many in the area.
