Rosewell

The village of Rosewell in Midlothian, Scotland is a settlement that was built on the mining industry, an industry which has been so important to this region; in fact most of this former mining village was actually created and owned by Archibald Hood, the Manager of Whitehill Colliery,. Archibald Hood took the business of running the village seriously and his mine workers were housed in rows of terraced cottages, each with its own garden. He also ensured the establishment of key community amenities like churches, schools, a co-operative store and even utilised the 'Gothenburg' system to put the profits from the public house back into community projects.

Rosewell is still has real sense of community, offering ample amenities and is located within easy reach of other towns offering additional choices for dining, leisure and shopping. The community continues to thrive here as Archibald Hood would have hoped and Rosewell is home to two churches; St. Mathew’s Catholic Church and the 19th century Rosewell Parish Church, Church of Scotland. The Rosewell Parish Church was built originally as a ‘daughter church’ of Lasswade Parish Church. The surrounding area has attractive walks including the Penicuik to Dalkeith walkway.
